NAPIER: The world has no hesitation in acknowledging that DLF-IPL has had an impact on Indian cricket in a huge way.
In some ways, the world is now waking up to the new improved Indian ODI and T20 team because of the DLF-IPL. It has been forced to admit that the Indian ODI and T20 teams are at a new level owing to the advent of the DLF-IPL. Now, the world is dreading to see what level India's cricketers go to in the coming seasons of the DLF-IPL.
The teams that have felt the fury of India's ODI and T20 team have been quick to acknowledge that. The first one to admit that has been England's former skipper Kevin Pietersen. His side felt the rough end of India's burgeoning success in the ODIs last year in India.
Pietersen certainly feels that India's rise as a one-day power has been because of the DLF-IPL. “It's important for our players to learn how to hit fours and sixes. You can do that in Twenty20 cricket and you can practise it. You must practise it in order to play it. In the middle, when you try to play like that you have to know you've practised it and Twenty20 is a boundary fest. I'm afraid to say it but they (India) have taken the game to a new level because of IPL and I think the players recognise that,” he says.
Far away from Pietersen's expressed opinion in the West Indies, India's former coach John Wright here also salutes the impact of the DLF-IPL. Wright feels that the DLF-IPL has enabled India scout for specialised players in the shorter formats of the game. He admits that India's new-found success in the shorter versions is because they have been prepared to try out players suited for the shorter forms.
“You got to have specialised players particularly in the ODIs. And IPL has shown these players the ability to clear the boundary at will,” Wright says.
The former New Zealand captain says his former charges now have the ability to chase down any target because of the advent of the DLF-IPL. “If you look at the numbers, they can now score at 120 per 100 balls. They have the capability now as their game has evolved, the scores are getting bigger, but it is tough on the bowlers,” Wright says
